Why do I need two fathers, my dad here on Earth and God in heaven?

"How great is the love the Father has given us so freely! Now we can be called children of God. And that’s what we really are…!" (1 John 3:1).

"A father is tender and kind to his children. In the same way, the Lord is tender and kind to those who have respect for him" (Psalm 103:13).

We call God our "Father" because He created us, protects us, and provides for us. Our human fathers might do those things too, but God is perfect!

In the Bible, God is often called "Father," especially the Father of Israel. He cared for His people, taught them, and asked the people to obey Him. They even called Him "Abba" in Romans 8:15, "...By the Spirit’s power we call God Abba. Abba means Father." That is like calling God "daddy" or "papa." Even in the Lord’s Prayer, Jesus taught His disciples to pray, "Our father in heaven…" When we accept Jesus as our Savior, God becomes our Father in heaven.

Our earthly fathers are called to care for us and, teach us, and they want us to obey them too. They aren’t perfect, but God wants us to be obedient to them.

We can thank God we have two fathers!
