What does the rainbow mean?

"I have put my rainbow in the clouds. It will be the sign of the covenant between me and the earth" (Genesis 9:13).

"When the rainbow appears in the clouds, I will see it. I will remember that my covenant will last forever..." (Genesis 9:16).

The rainbow is God’s sign of His promise to never flood the whole earth again.

A long time ago, a flood covered the entire world. The only people who survived were Noah and his family—only eight people! The only land animals that survived were those on the ark, a huge boat God told Noah to build before the flood.

When they came out of the ark, God put a rainbow in the sky. God said, "I will remember my covenant between me and you and every kind of living creature. The waters will never again become a flood to destroy all life" (Genesis 9:15). The rainbow was God’s promise to never flood the entire world again.

Today people sometimes think a rainbow is good luck or refers to something else. But the Bible is clear. The rainbow is God's promise to care for people and animals. He loves us and wants us to believe in Him (John 3:16) and live for Him (John 10:10).
