What does it mean that Jesus is Lord?
"So God lifted him up to the highest place. God gave him the name that is above every name. When the name of Jesus is spoken, everyone will kneel down to worship him. Everyone in heaven and on earth and under the earth will kneel down to worship him. Everyone’s mouth will say that Jesus Christ is Lord. And God the Father will receive the glory" (Philippians 2:9–11).
"But make sure that in your hearts you honor Christ as Lord..." (1 Peter 3:15).
Jesus is called "Lord" as a sign of honor and respect.A "lord" is usually a master or ruler of some sort. In the old days, lords were people who ruled over a group of people or took care of them. The people would call them "lord" to show respect.
When we say "Jesus is Lord," we’re telling Jesus that we honor and respect Him, because He is in charge of all things. Jesus has "all authority in heaven and on earth" (Matthew 28:18). But it’s even more than that! When we say Jesus is Lord, we’re telling Jesus that we know He is God, and that He is worthy of all our worship. We’re also telling Him that we want to obey Him, because He knows what’s best and cares for us always.
Even though Jesus is Lord, He still became a man and came to the earth so He could die for our sins. He didn’t deserve to be punished for sin—we do! Jesus is perfect and has never sinned. But Jesus died for our sins anyway so we could be forgiven. And after three days, He came back to life and went back to heaven to live as Lord of all. Because He rose again, everyone who believes in Him can one day live with Him in heaven. Those people will get to worship Him as Lord forever and ever.
