God created humans “very good.” Adam and Eve were devoid of genetic imperfections or congenital faults and were called to be fruitful and multiply (Genesis 1:28). In Cain’s time, incest was necessary for Adam and Eve’s offspring to follow God’s command. When Adam and Eve sinned, it brought death and destruction to the entire earth, even to genetics. Incest was permissible until the time of Moses when God gave the Israelites laws regarding marriage and sexual relations (Leviticus 18; 20). The laws were created to protect humanity from destruction caused by inbreeding and to reflect God's desire for the Israelites to live distinctively from other nations. God’s laws upheld marriage, purity, and individual dignity. We are called to live upholding the same values.

God created marriage and has boundaries around what He seeks to protect (Genesis 2:24). Although we do not live according to the commandments God gave Israel, they reveal to us what God is like, what is important to Him, and principles for living it out. Marriage and sexual purity are still equally as important to God today (Hebrews 13:4).

First Corinthians 6:18 calls us to, “Flee from sexual immorality. Every other sin a person commits is outside the body, but the sexually immoral person sins against his own body.” Sexual sin has consequences that devastate us and others. Sin brings death (James 1:15), but Jesus came to give us life abundantly (John 10:10). We can experience that abundant life as we love Him and live for Him, following His ways, including with our relationships (John 15:1–17).

While it’s difficult for us who know incest is a sin and who see it as unacceptable to think about it as having ever been acceptable, we can understand that the population would not have grown if incest did not occur. Within just a couple of generations, there would have been plenty of options for people to not have to marry their siblings or close relatives. We can trust God’s good plan both in populating the earth and in limiting the effects of sin.
