What does the Bible say about respecting my parents?
"Honor your father and mother. Then you will live a long time in the land the Lord your God is giving you" (Exodus 20:12).
"Listen to your father, who gave you life. Don’t hate your mother when she is old" (Proverbs 23:22).
"Children, obey your parents as believers in the Lord. Obey them because it’s the right thing to do" (Ephesians 6:1).
The Bible tells us to honor our parents (Exodus 20:12).It is important that we respect our parents throughout our lives. Respect means giving our attention to someone in a high regard. The Bible tells us we are to honor our parents, which is the same teaching as respecting our parents (Ephesians 6:1).
How do we respect and honor our parents? We can honor and respect our parents by obeying them. When we obey our parents, we are honoring God. We should never be disrespectful to them or try to cause problems for them. Instead, we need to extend respect and honor.
When the Bible says we are to obey our parents and respect them, this does not mean it is okay for parents to abuse you in any manner. If you are being abused by a parent, talk to a trusted adult, such as a teacher or a pastor.
