Why do we pray in Jesus' name?

"And I will do anything you ask in my name. Then the Son will bring glory to the Father. You may ask me for anything in my name. I will do it" (John 14:13–14).

"Christ Jesus is at the right hand of God and is also praying for us" (Romans 8:34).

We pray in Jesus name for a few reasons, but maybe the most obvious one is that Jesus told us to pray this way!

As Christians, we want to do Jesus' will and follow His instructions. And when we pray in Jesus’ name, it shows that we have accepted Jesus as our Lord and Savior.

Jesus actually takes our prayers to God. The Bible also tells us that Jesus prays for us (Romans 8:34)! That's why Jesus is sometimes called our High Priest (Hebrews 4:14–16).

When we do pray in Jesus' name, we're recognizing that Jesus' power and authority—not just when He was here on earth, but also right now as He sits at God’s throne in heaven. He is always presenting us and our needs to God.”

The hymn "What a Friend We Have in Jesus" by Joseph M. Scriven puts this so well:

What a friend we have in Jesus,
All our sins and grief's to bear!
What a privilege to carry
Everything to God in prayer!

Jesus beat both sin and death on the cross. This means we're no longer separated from God by sin! Because of Jesus and the privilege of being able to pray in His name, we can have a direct line to God.
