Is it wrong to swear to God?
"Do not misuse the name of the Lord your God. The Lord will find guilty anyone who misuses his name" (Exodus 20:7).
"Again, you have heard what was said to your people long ago. They were told, 'Do not break the promises you make to the Lord. Keep your promises to the Lord that you have made.' But here is what I tell you. Do not make any promises like that at all. Do not make them in the name of heaven. That is God’s throne" (Matthew 5:33-34).
"And do not make a promise in your own name. You can’t make even one hair of your head white or black. All you need to say is simply 'Yes' or 'No.' Anything more than this comes from the evil one" (Matthew 5:36-37).
Yes, it is wrong to swear to God.Some people say "I swear to God that I did..." or "I swear to God that I didn’t do it!" Swearing to God is a sin because we are not to use God’s name in vain (Exodus 20:7).
Swearing to God is disrespectful. If you are being honest in what you are saying, there is no reason to use God’s name in vain. Saying the truth is enough.
Making oaths or a promise to God should not be done mindlessly. If you do promise God something, make sure you are certain first and then fulfill your promise. There is nothing specifically told to us in the Bible that says we cannot make promises to God. However, we should never swear to God or use His name in vain. Instead of using God’s name in vain, we should praise His wonderful name.
