What is the sinner’s prayer? Does it save us?
"It is written, 'No one is right with God, no one at all'" (Romans 3:10).
"But here is how God has shown his love for us. While we were still sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8).
"Say with your mouth, 'Jesus is Lord.' Believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead. Then you will be saved. With your heart you believe and are made right with God. With your mouth you say what you believe. And so you are saved" (Romans 10:9-10).
The sinner’s prayer is a prayer people recite when they know they are a sinner. No, the sinner’s prayer alone doesn’t save us.The sinner’s prayer consists of a person declaring they know they are a sinner (sin is anything we think, say, or do that goes against God) and that they are in need of saving by Jesus. The Bible tells us we are all sinners in need of saving (Romans 3:23). Nobody is “good enough” to go to heaven on their own. Every person must accept Jesus as their Savior in order to be saved.
After a person understands they are a sinner, they can place faith in Jesus. A person can do this by believing that Jesus died for their sins, was buried, and arose from the grave. Only by placing faith in Jesus can a person be saved.
There are no magical words one must say to be saved. If you know today that you need saving by Jesus, pray to Him. Tell Him that you know you have done bad things, but that you need Him to forgive you and save you. Jesus delights to hear from you and He will save you.
