Why are some people single or not married?

"I wish all of you were single like me. But you each have your own gift from God. One has this gift, and another has that one” (1 Corinthians 7:7).

"In my opinion, she is happier if she stays single. And I also think that I am led by the Spirit of God in saying this” (1 Corinthians 7:40).

"Jesus replied, 'Not everyone can accept the idea of staying single. Only those who have been helped to live without getting married can accept it. Some men are not able to have children because they were born that way. Some have been made that way by other people. Others have chosen to live that way in order to serve the kingdom of heaven. The one who can accept this should accept it'" (Matthew 19:11–12).

Some people are single and don’t get married because they choose not to be married, they are waiting for the right person, or they want to be completely focused on Jesus.

Getting married or not is a personal choice. Some people choose to stay single because they never found the right person, and others choose not to be married for other personal reasons. A person might also choose to stay unmarried because they want to be fully devoted to Christ. Marriage is often said to be a gift, but so is singleness (1 Corinthians 7:7).

The Bible says that people who are single will be able to focus more on the Lord (1 Corinthians 7). When a couple gets married, their first priority is each other. This can lead them to placing more of a focus on their spouse, rather than God. Getting married is a good thing, as God created it (Genesis 2:24); however, singleness was also created by God.

The Lord tells us that those who can accept singleness should accept it (Matthew 19:11–12). Singleness can result in a beautiful life. Whether God calls you to a married life or a single life, know that it will be wonderful. God wants us to live a holy and godly life, and sometimes this means getting married, and other times, it means being single. Both are gifts and blessings from the Lord.
