Why did my friend say "I asked Jesus in my heart" when he got saved?

"Then Christ will live in your hearts because you believe in him. And I pray that your love will have deep roots. I pray that it will have a strong foundation" (Ephesians 3:17).

"He saved us. It wasn’t because of the good things we had done. It was because of his mercy. He saved us by washing away our sins. We were born again. The Holy Spirit gave us new life" (Titus 3:5).

Your friend is saying he asked Jesus to be his Savior.

In some cultures, the "heart" is the center of emotions, so some people refer to it when they talk about salvation.

The idea of "asking Jesus into your heart" isn't found in the Bible. It isn’t wrong to think of salvation that way, but we need to be careful not to minimize salvation. We want to give a clear message so other people can understand. The Bible has a clear message about salvation: We are to change our minds about our sin and about who Christ is, believe Jesus died and rose again, and receive the gift of eternal life by faith.

Salvation is about trusting in Jesus as your Savior, receiving the forgiveness He offers by grace through faith. Salvation is about being made new through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ and the power of the Holy Spirit (Titus 3:5).
