Whole (Made), Wholly, Wholesome:

for which see ALL, A, No. 3, and ALTOGETHER, signifies "whole,"

(a) with a noun, e.g., Mat 5:29, 30; Mar 8:36; 15:1, 16, 33; Luk 11:36 (1st part), though holon may here be used adverbially with photeinon, "wholly light" [as in the 2nd part, RV, "wholly (full of light)"]; Jhn 11:50; 1Cr 12:17 (1st part); 1Jo 2:2; 5:19;

(b) absolutely, as a noun, e.g., Mat 13:33; 1Cr 12:17 (2nd part).

Whole (Made), Wholly, Wholesome:

for which see ALL, A, No. 1, is sometimes translated "the whole" when used with the article, e.g., Mat 8:32, 34; Rom 8:22.

Whole (Made), Wholly, Wholesome:

for which see ALL, A, No. 2, is rendered "the whole," e.g., in Luk 19:37; 23:1.

Whole (Made), Wholly, Wholesome:

from No. 1 and kleros, "a lot," is rendered "whole" in 1Th 5:23: see ENTIRE.

Whole (Made), Wholly, Wholesome:

(cp. Eng., "hygiene") is used especially in the Gospels of making sick folk "whole," Mat 12:13; 15:31; Mar 3:5; 5:34; Luk 6:10; Jhn 5:4, 6, 9, 11, 14, 15; 7:23; also Act 4:10; of "sound (speech)," Tts 2:8.

Whole (Made), Wholly, Wholesome:

"wholly," 1Th 5:23, is lit., "whole-complete" (A, No. 1, and telos, "an end"), i.e., "through and through;" the Apostle's desire is that the sanctification of the believer may extend to every part of his being. The word is similar in meaning to No. 4; holokleros draws attention to the person as a "whole," holoteles, to the several parts which constitute him.

Note: In 1Ti 4:15, the sentence freely rendered "give thyself wholly to them" is, lit., "be in these (things)."

Whole (Made), Wholly, Wholesome:

"to be in good health," akin to A, No. 5, is rendered "they that are whole" in Luk 5:31; "whole" in Luk 7:10 (present participle); "wholesome" in 1Ti 6:3, AV (RV, "sound;" marg., "healthful").

"to save," is sometimes rendered "to make whole," and, in the Passive Voice, "to be made whole," or "to be whole," e.g., Mat 9:21, 22 (twice), and parallel passages; Act 4:9.
