"to cut out or down" (ek, "out of," kopto, "to cut"), is rendered "to hew down," of trees, Mat 3:10; 7:19 (a similar testimony by John the Baptist and Christ); Luk 3:9.

Hew, Hew Down, Hewn:

signifies "to hew out stones" (from latomos, "a stone-cutter;" las, "a stone," temno, "to cut"), and is used of the sepulchre which Joseph of Arimathaea had "hewn" out of a rock for himself, where the body of the Lord was buried, Mat 27:60; Mar 15:46.

Hew, Hew Down, Hewn:

denotes "hewn in stone" (las, "a stone," xeo, "to scrape;" cp. A, No. 2), is used of Christ's tomb, in Luk 23:53.
