primarily denoted "a blow" (from a root tup--, seen also in tupto, "to strike"), hence,

(a) an impression, the mark of a "blow," Jhn 20:25;

(b) the "impress" of a seal, the stamp made by a die, a figure, image, Act 7:43;

(c) a "form" or mold, Rom 6:17 (see RV);

(d) the sense or substance of a letter, Act 23:25;

(e) "an ensample," pattern, Act 7:44; Hbr 8:5, "pattern;" in an ethical sense, 1Cr 10:6; Phl 3:17; 1Th 1:7; 2Th 3:9; 1Ti 4:12, RV, "ensample;" Tts 2:7, RV, "ensample," for AV, "pattern;" 1Pe 5:3; in a doctrinal sense, a type, Rom 5:14.

"an outline, sketch," akin to hupotupoo, "to delineate," is used metaphorically to denote a "pattern," an "ensample," 1Ti 1:16, RV, "ensample," for AV, "pattern;" 2Ti 1:13, RV, "pattern," for AV, "form."

eg-zam'-p'-l (tupos, "a pattern," hupodeigma, "copy" "representation" hupogrammos, "a writing-copy," example): A typical, representative, or illustrative case; a pattern or model for imitation (hupodeigma, Joh 13:15; Heb 8:5 the King James Version; Jas 5:10; hupogrammos, 1Pe 2:21; tupos, 1Ti 4:12 the King James Version) or warning (deigma, "a sample," "exhibition," Jude 1:7; compare 2Pe 2:6; hupodeigma, Heb 4:11; tupos, 1Co 10:6,11)." Ensample" (tupos, #/APC 2Macc 6:28,31; Php 3:17; 1Th 1:7; 2Th 3:9; 1Ti 4:12; 1Pe 5:3) and "example" have the same meaning, but the former is always suggestive of goodness.
