Sheep-Fold [E] Bible Dictionaries

Dictionaries :: Sheep-Fold

Easton's Bible Dictionary

Sheep-Fold:

a strong fenced enclosure for the protection of the sheep gathered within it (Num 32:24; 1Ch 17:7; Psa 50:9; 78:70). In Jhn 10:16 the Authorized Version renders by "fold" two distinct Greek words, aule and poimne, the latter of which properly means a "flock," and is so rendered in the Revised Version. (See also Mat 26:31; Luk 2:8; 1Cr 9:7.) (See FOLD.)

Fold:

an enclosure for flocks to rest together (Isa 13:20). Sheep-folds are mentioned Num 32:16, 24, 36; 2Sa 7:8; Zeph. 2:6; Jhn 10:1, etc. It was prophesied of the cities of Ammon (Eze 25:5), Aroer (Isa 17:2), and Judaea, that they would be folds or couching-places for flocks. "Among the pots," of the Authorized Version (Psa 68:13), is rightly in the Revised Version, "among the sheepfolds."
