(b) "straits, distress," Luk 21:23 (in ver. 25 "distress" translates No. 3); 1Cr 7:26; 1Th 3:7; the last two refer to the lack of material things.

primarily signifies "to skin, to flay;" then "to rend, mangle;" hence, "to vex, trouble, annoy;" it is found in the most authentic mss. in Mat 9:36, RV, "distressed" (of the multitudes who applied to the Lord for healing); AV, "fainted," translating the alternative reading, ekluo, lit., "to loosen out." It is also used in Mar 5:35; Luk 7:6; 8:49.
