denotes

(a) "a necessity," imposed whether by external circumstances, e.g., Luk 23:17, or inward pressure, e.g., 1Cr 9:16;

(b) "straits, distress," Luk 21:23 (in ver. 25 "distress" translates No. 3); 1Cr 7:26; 1Th 3:7; the last two refer to the lack of material things.

properly signifies "to test by rubbing on the touchstone" (basanos, "a touchstone"), then, "to question by applying torture;" hence "to vex, torment;" in the Passive Voice, "to be harassed, distressed;" it is said of men struggling in a boat against wind and waves, Mat 14:24, RV, "distressed" (AV, "tossed"); Mar 6:48, RV, "distressed" (AV, "toiling").

primarily signifies "to skin, to flay;" then "to rend, mangle;" hence, "to vex, trouble, annoy;" it is found in the most authentic mss. in Mat 9:36, RV, "distressed" (of the multitudes who applied to the Lord for healing); AV, "fainted," translating the alternative reading, ekluo, lit., "to loosen out." It is also used in Mar 5:35; Luk 7:6; 8:49.
