Matthew 26 - Scottish Metrical Paraphrases 1781(MP1781)

SONG 358,8,8,8tune: Communion, 5.Matt 26:26-29

26 ’Twas on that night, when doom’d to know

The eager rage of ev’ry foe,

That night in which he was betray’d,

The Saviour of the world took bread:

2 And, after thanks and glory giv’n

To him that rules in earth and heav’n,

That symbol of his flesh he broke,

And thus to all his foll’wers spoke:

3 My broken body thus I give

For you, for all; take, eat, and live;

And oft the sacred rite renew,

That brings my wondrous love to view.

27 Then in his hands the cup he rais’d,

And God anew he thank’d and prais’d;

While kindness in his bosom glow’d,

And from his lips salvation flow’d:

28 My blood I thus pour forth, he cries,

To cleanse the soul in sin that lies;

In this the covenant is seal’d,

And Heav’n’s eternal grace reveal’d.

29 With love to man this cup is fraught,

Let all partake the sacred draught;

Through latest ages let it pour,

In mem’ry of my dying hour.
